Father John Surette, SJ, consistently unfolds the Gospel message in light of “green spirituality”. Below is an excerpt from his June 10 homily. Click here to read the entire homily.
“Then Moses took the blood of the bulls and sprinkled it on the people, saying: This is the blood of the Covenant that the Lord has made with you…” (Exodus 24: 8)
I will be your God and you will be my people. No longer will you be in bondage. I promise you a land flowing with milk and honey in which you and your children can dwell. In the future you will live as free people having your own place under the sun. In return for this gift you can show your gratitude by keeping my commandments.
We are called to remember all the gifts we have received: gifts of clean air to breathe, fresh water to drink, fertile soil in which to grow our food; gifts of family and friends; gifts of education and career; gifts of faith and hope and love. I invite you to add your own personal gifts to this listing of gifts poured out upon you.
To show gratitude by taking actions so that the air remains clean and the water remains fresh, and the soils remain fertile, is to honor these gifts that are necessary for life.
