Diocese Response to Illinois Attorney General Report

Dear Parish Family-

We are saddened and distressed by the results of a 5-year investigation into child sex abuse cases in the 6 Illinois dioceses, including the Diocese of Joliet, which was released Tuesday by the Illinois Attorney General.

There is a deep wound in the Body of Christ. We here at St. Thomas are deeply concerned that this wound has been re-opened and there is new suffering for people (both survivors and people who love them) who have been affected by the betrayal and sinful actions of far too many priests and bishops who had willingly accepted ordination to act “in persona Christi” – in the person of Christ.

The Church acknowledges the past mishandling of these cases over past decades. However, over the past 17 years there have been just two (2 too many!) substantiated allegations in the Diocese of Joliet. Both men were removed from priesthood and served jail sentences.

We want to reassure you that we are vigilant for the safety and wellbeing of our children, strictly enforcing diocesan regulations regarding periodic fingerprinting and criminal background checks for all parish staff and all volunteers who work with children, as well as monthly continuing education for staff. If you or a loved one are in need of trauma care or counseling please reach out to pastoral staff.

This Pentecost weekend, through our tears of shame and remorse, we seek and pray for the power of the Holy Spirit for strength to face this enduring crisis, for the healing and consolation of all those affected, and for the courage to go on loving and working in Jesus’ name.
