Mental Health First Aid July 26

Mental Health First Aid (Blended Learning) will be held at St. Thomas Saturday, July 26, from 9:00 am–3:30 pm. Diane McQueen and Tony Lyons are the instructors.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an early intervention program that educates adults on recognizing signs of potential mental health challenges, offering nonjudgmental support and reassurance to those experiencing difficulties, and guiding individuals toward appropriate professional help and services

Karen Beals, PCC, CPRC, recently took the class and had this to say:

“I highly recommend the Mental Health training. I had no idea what to expect. The training is super comprehensive with excellent and practical information. The breakouts were also helpful in solidifying the learning and how to apply it. The facilitators are knowledgeable and passionate about the material. I am in a profession that has high mental health stresses. I learned a lot. This is a very important course to take and well worth your time.”

How Blended Learning Works

2 hours of online self-paced coursework followed by a scheduled 5.5-6 hour in person Instructor-led class.

By course completion, learners will

  • Describe the purpose and role of Mental Health First Aid.
  • Identify the impact of mental health and substance use challenges on American adults’ wellbeing.
  • Explain the probability of recovery from mental health or substance use challenges.
  • Describe safety and privacy principles for both the Mental Health First Aider and the recipient.
  • Explain the 5 steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE).
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in adults.
  • Evaluate the impact of early intervention on mental health and substance use challenges.
  • Apply ALGEE steps to non-crisis scenarios with early or worsening signs of challenges.
  • Apply ALGEE steps to crisis scenarios. Choose appropriate self-care methods post-Mental Health First Aid application.
