For the past ten years the volunteers of St. Thomas the Apostle’s St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Conference have helped about 160 families each year with rent and utilities (distributing about $50,000 each year). Until recently, we have had enough members so that each team of two only had to “volunteer” once every six to eight weeks. Right now we have very few volunteers making it necessary for our members to “volunteer” more often. This can change if you can take some time to become a new member. By joining SVDP, you will not only learn how to help families in need of rent and utilities, but you will also increase your spirituality. As St. Theresa of Avila said: “Christ has no body now, but yours. No hands, no feet on earth, but yours.” Christ is counting on you!
Given the pandemic conditions we are all “volunteering” from home. Training will be virtual and involve conversations and step-by-step instructions. To get more details, simply send an email to Mike Ryder at firstname.lastname@example.org or leave a message for Mike by calling 630.355.8980, x121.
SVDP Helps Family with Rent and Phone Needed to Generate Income for Family
A St. Thomas the Apostle neighbor recently called us for help because her business had lost all of its clients due to the pandemic. Her son was working and helping with rent, but he was suspended from his job when a couple of the workers tested positive for COVID-19. She had some money for her May rent of $1,200, but not enough. Working with Loaves & Fishes Cares, we were able to help not only with her rent, but also with her mobile phone bill. The phone was critical to her helping regain the business she had lost and re-establish her income stream
We are still able to help meet the needs of our “Friends in Need” in most instances. However, you can help by writing a check payable to “St. Thomas SVDP” and mail it to 1500 Brookdale Rd., Naperville, IL 60563 to the attention of Mike Ryder.
