Caregiver Corner
A recent article in Brain & Life offers ideas for keeping the holidays stress-free when celebrating with a loved one diagnosed with a neurological condition. While I might feel guilty not involving my mother in holiday preparations and festivities, I know she feels better when such occasions are low-key and involve just a few people. The article suggests finding simple ways for your loved one to be involved such as decorating cookies or watching as you decorate the tree. Bring lunch for a holiday celebration if they are in a care facility rather than going to a restaurant.
Remember to take time for yourself. If you are a full-time caregiver, creating moments of peace or respite in your day is important during this busy season. Create a quiet space. If your loved one is celebrating with you, find a quiet room they can spend some one-on-one time with relatives, enjoy a craft with the grandkids or watch a favorite program. Taking breaks can reduce the likelihood of confusion or mood changes.
With some thoughtful planning, you and your loved one can make this holiday season a bit lower in stress. Happy Holidays!
