THE SACRAMENTS OF HEALING: Celebrating the healing power of Jesus
“The whole power of the sacrament of Penance consists in restoring us to God’s grace and joining us with him in an intimate friendship” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1468).
The sacrament of reconciliation is an incredible gift to us and a testament of God’s love. The parable of the prodigal son found in Luke chapter 16 recounts the story of a young man who leaves his father’s house in pursuit of his own wants. When things go wrong, he finds himself returning to his father’s house desperate and pleading for a job. His father doesn’t give him a chance to plead his case and simply accepts him home.
This beautiful parable reminds all of us of the love of our Heavenly Father. The sacrament of Reconciliation is the meeting place in which we return to our Father’s house. Without qualifications or conditions, He always receives us home into His loving embrace. Yes, we go there to name our sins, but we’re there to receive the Father’s great love and mercy.
