Lectors
Lectors proclaim the Word of God to the congregation. This ministry is centered on sharing Scripture with clarity, reverence, and faith, helping others to listen and reflect on God’s message. Lectors read the First and Second Readings and may also lead the Prayers of the Faithful when needed. Their voice brings the living Word to life, preparing hearts and minds for the Gospel and the homily.
Lectors are entrusted with a sacred responsibility—to help others hear God’s Word spoken with care and conviction.
Serving as a lector is both an honor and a spiritual calling. It allows individuals to grow deeply in their relationship with Scripture and to serve the parish community in a meaningful way.
Lectors contribute to the beauty and flow of the liturgy, helping create a prayerful environment where God’s Word can inspire and comfort everyone at St. Thomas.
Training is available, which includes pronunciation, speaking clearly with a microphone in the acoustical environment of the church and the logistics of lectoring during various liturgies. Lectors also have access to resources for studying scripture in advance so they feel prepared and excited to share with the faith community.
- It is very rare that there a single Lector. Most masses have one that reads the first reading and another that reads the second reading.
- Lectors can also read the Prayers of the Faithful if a Deacon does not read them.
- Many lectors describe their ministry as a way to grow closer to Scripture and to strengthen their own faith through sharing God’s Word.
