Protecting the Dignity of Life
A bill known as the End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act has advanced in the Illinois legislature and is awaiting possible action by the governor. If signed, it would allow terminally ill adults to receive a prescription for medication to end their own lives.
As Catholics, we affirm that every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. We also understand the deep suffering that can accompany terminal illness. Our faith calls us to offer comfort, palliative care, and the presence of love and hope to those who suffer.
Please pray for our lawmakers, our healthcare providers and all those facing the end of life. May our state choose compassion rooted in the dignity of every person. If you wish to express opposition to this bill, contact your state lawmakers (go to ilga.gov for contact information).
