Race Card Background
The other day, I was in conversation with two friends, one of whom was a man of color. We were talking about meeting with a larger group for ‘wings’. I was warned that the gathering could get loud. In a joking way, I said, “I bet Steve is the loud one” and implied that my friend of color would be the boisterous life of the party. He laughed it off. As I thought more about it, at the very least, my remark was not in good taste. At its worst, I think it was a prejudiced remark. The thing is…Steve is a wonderful man, kind, sensitive, thoughtful, affirming, and I’ve never seen him be unnecessarily loud. I’ve thought back, many times, to my remark and wondered where it came from and what I was thinking. I realized that I have more work to do to root out my own biases and prejudices. God help me!
