Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is available at the Sunday 9:30 am mass where children are invited to gather separately to hear the Gospel story of the day proclaimed in language, activities, music and prayer appropriate to their age.
There is no registration required.
After the Gloria is proclaimed, the Presider will invite children up to the altar and give a preview of what this week’s gospel message is. As they walk out of the church with their teachers, members of the St. Thomas the Apostle community sing and encourage them to learn. They return to their parents pews during the break between the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word fosters a sense of belonging and community among young parishioners.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word helps young parishioners feel included and valued by allowing them to hear and talk about God’s Word in a way they can understand. The interactive stories, songs, and discussions make learning about faith exciting and meaningful, helping children connect the Gospel to their own lives. By experiencing church in a welcoming, age-appropriate setting, children build friendships and look forward to being part of the parish community each week.
- It allows children to hear and reflect on the Sunday readings in language they can easily understand.
- The structure mirrors the adult Liturgy of the Word, helping children learn the rhythm of Mass.
- Trained catechists or volunteers lead the session, often using storytelling, visuals, or discussion.
- The readings follow the same lectionary cycle as the main Mass, so children learn the same Gospel message as adults.
- Music, simple prayers, and interactive questions are often included to help children engage more fully.
- Take-home sheets or activities help families continue discussing the Gospel at home.
