The diaconate is a family affair for the Cuzzones. Deacon Joe’s father was ordained a deacon in the Diocese of Joliet in 1983 and went on to serve until the end of his life in 2001. When Deacon Joe’s dad was in his last moments, he was surrounded by his children, and Deacon Will Warden, who ministered to all present. Deacon Joe realized in that moment that he wanted to be able to give that same comfort and care to others as Deacon Will. He knew he eventually wanted to discern God’s call to the diaconate.
Deacon Joe and his wife were raising three children in those years, and in that time period, he and his wife prayed about the timing, and finally, the moment came. During one Mass where Joe was playing drums with the worship band, he felt the strong, unmistakable call — the Holy Spirit made it clear to him. He responded by entering the diaconate program, and Deacon Joe was finally ordained in August 2018.
