Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction

Support on a journey of spiritual self-discovery

“Yahweh, you know me and examine me … you understand my thoughts from afar … you know my conduct … You created my inmost self … a wonder am I and all your works are wonders.”

~ Psalm 139

Why Spiritual Direction?

Do you ever feel the need just to be heard? To have your spiritual experience understood and validated?

Do you have a need for support in a time of personal challenges, sorrow, confusion or loss?

Do you have a longing for a deep connection with God and with Life?

Do you desire to know yourself deeply, to be seen as God sees you?

What is Spiritual Direction?

A practice in which a spiritual director supports another person in enhancing their awareness of the presence of God in every aspect of one’s life.

1

Discernment

Sensing in your heart and mind what God might want you to know, and that God is present moment to moment.
2

Spirituality

Sharing your life’s journey with the various ways that God, the Holy Spirit, Jesus and others have been with you.
3

Gathering Materials

Although spiritual direction may touch on emotional, physical or psychological experiences, it is not counseling or psychotherapy.
4

Confidentiality

It’s a safe, confidential space for you to explore your beliefs, doubts, experiences and growth.

“The kingdom of God is within you.”

~ Luke 17:21

Support for Spiritual Self-Discovery

A spiritual director’s role is to listen deeply, without judgment or advice, and offer compassion and support.

They may open a meeting with a prayer or a reading from scripture, or simply by asking, “How are you?”

Telling your story, and hearing it back can be a powerful way to reflect on it. Thus, often they ask questions for clarification, or restate what’s been said or understood.

They are not there to help “fix” a problem, or give solutions.

Rather, they might ask, “Where is God in all this?” or “What would Jesus say?”

“Whenever two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them.”

~ Matthew 18:25

Reflections
  • “I found this more helpful than the ten years of therapy I had.”
  • “I was able to hear my story from a different perspective and see it in a different light, the light of grace.”
  • “God must have led me to this.”
  • “As a teacher I was terrified of starting up again in the fall, but my numbness and stomach aches are gone and I feel much calmer. I thank God.”
  • “I am very grateful for the support and the reminder of God’s constant presence.”
How does Spiritual Direction work?

Meetings are one-on one, usually lasting about one hour, when it is convenient to both, and are typically once a month depending upon need.
