Update from Fr. Frantzdy
On July 14, I had the opportunity to speak with Fr. Frantzdy and hear directly from him about life in Duchity, the faith-filled activities at St. Marie Madeleine Parish, and the health concerns he continues to carry. As always, his words reflected both the challenges facing the people of Duchity and the deep hope that sustains their community.
St. Marie Madeleine Feast Day
The parish’s patron saint feast day is a deeply important and joyful celebration for the community. In preparation, Fr. Frantzdy hosts three days of prayer, known as a “Triduum of Prayer.” People come from nearby villages to join in prayer and celebration, and visiting priests and religious often stay for two to three days. Fr. Frantzdy takes this responsibility to heart, welcoming others with care and reverence despite the many demands placed upon him.
Health Concerns
Fr. Frantzdy continues to experience persistent back pain, though medication seems to be helping him manage it somewhat. After the feast day, he hopes to travel to Port-au-Prince for an MRI and additional medical care. Although gang activity remains a concern there, Fr. Frantzdy believes he can make the trip safely. Please keep him especially close in prayer as he seeks the care he needs.
Education in Duchity
The school year has ended, except for exams for students graduating from high school. Even during the summer break, Fr. Frantzdy is thinking about the children and hopes to make small but meaningful classroom improvements, including repairing benches for the students.
Protecting Children
Once again, Fr. Frantzdy spoke with deep concern about his desire to offer abuse-prevention training for young people in Duchity and the surrounding areas. His current vision is a two-week session for children ages 5 to 10, with meals and lodging provided. Fr. Frantzdy would offer part of the instruction himself and invite additional instructors to help. His hope is to give children practical tools to recognize warning signs of grooming and unsafe behavior, helping them feel safer and more protected.
Please continue to hold Fr. Frantzdy and the people of Duchity in your prayers. Their burdens are heavy, but their faith remains strong. As Fr. Frantzdy said during our conversation, “Life is hard for everyone.” May our prayers and support remind them that they are not carrying those hardships alone.
