Funding a Dream
Earlier this month, a woman reached out to the OSJ office with a request that was about more than paying a fee — it was about reclaiming a path forward. Over the years, St. Thomas Cares has walked alongside her and her family, offering assistance at critical moments so she could continue caring for those who depend on her. She shared that her current job, paying $16.00 an hour, was simply not enough to support her family. But she also shared a dream: she had once worked as a hair stylist and believed that returning to that career could open the door to greater stability. To take that step, she needed to have her professional license reinstated. She had tried to save a little from each paycheck, but with everyday expenses pressing in, it felt out of reach. St. Thomas Cares was able to help by paying the license fee.
We cannot know exactly where this opportunity will lead, but we do know what it made possible in that moment: dignity, encouragement and the chance to pursue a better future. She was excited. She was grateful. And perhaps most importantly, she left with renewed hope — not only that her circumstances could change, but that she was not alone in trying to change them.
