Learn

“Migrants and refugees remind the Church of her pilgrim dimension, perpetually journeying towards her final homeland, sustained by a hope that is a theological virtue.” ~ Pope Leo XIV

In 2000, the United Nations General Assembly designated December 18 as International Migrants Day recognizing the large and increasing number of migrants in the world.

The USCCB recently issued a Special Message expressing their deep concern for the evolving situation impacting immigrants in the U.S. They remind us that Catholic teaching exhorts nations to recognize the fundamental dignity of all persons, including immigrants. More info here

We’ve all seen how the presence of ICE in our communities has negatively impacted the lives and rights of immigrants, both documented and undocumented as well as citizens. We’ve even seen the clergy denied the ability to provide pastoral care to those who have been detained. The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugees is devoted to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees. Together, the coalition works to win policies to ensure a more equitable society rooted in dignity and respect for all.

Pray

Jesus, as an infant you fled to Egypt with your mother Mary and Joseph.

You were a vulnerable family in a foreign land, looking for shelter and sustenance.

Help us to welcome those like you who cross our borders today.

Give us hearts of compassion, humane response,

And laws that respect the dignity of all immigrants.

Amen.
