Living the Dream: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK

Each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we pause to remember a pastor, prophet and peacemaker whose faith shaped a movement and whose courage still calls the Church to action. Dr. King did not merely speak about justice — he preached it, prayed it, marched it and lived it as a response to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Dr. King reminded us that faith is never meant to be passive. “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” Rooted in Christian love, he believed that God’s justice could transform hearts, communities and systems. His dream was not abstract or sentimental; it was practical, demanding and deeply spiritual.

At the center of Dr. King’s message was love — not a shallow or convenient love, but what he called a redemptive, courageous love. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” For the Church today, this means choosing love even when it is costly, uncomfortable or misunderstood.

Dr. King also warned against silence and complacency. “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” As people of faith, we are called not only to believe rightly, but to speak and act boldly when others are harmed or excluded.

As we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., may we recommit ourselves — not just to remembering his words, but to living them. May we walk humbly, love boldly and work faithfully until justice and peace embrace.
