The Race Card Project at St. Thomas

The St. Thomas Inclusive Justice Initiative believes, and we hope you agree (!) that there is value at getting a peek at varied views about race. We want to honor and give voice to your and others’ thoughts on this topic. So, let’s hear from you! What can you say, about race, in just six words? To date, over 500,000 people worldwide have participated in The Race Card Project by sharing their sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, always revealing thoughts on race, and using only six words to do so.

In 2010, journalist Michele Norris began inviting people to distill their thoughts on the word race to only six words. Printing 200 postcards and issuing a call to action, Norris and her team were unsure of what – if anything – would result. What took root was a groundswell. People often send backstories about what is behind their six-word statements. In 2013, The Race Card Project was awarded the prestigious Peabody Award for excellence in electronic communications for turning a pejorative phrase into a productive dialogue on a difficult topic.
