Umbrellas for Peace: A Creative Celebration of Hope
On September 21, we will celebrate the International Day of Peace with a joyful, hands-on art project: creating Umbrellas for Peace. These colorful umbrellas will become a visible sign of our shared longing for peace and will be displayed as we mark the International Day of Peace and celebrate the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4.
Why Umbrellas?
Lamb Umbrellas for Peace is a global art project that invites children and adults to paint, decorate and personalize umbrellas with images and messages of peace. Instead of focusing on the daily messages of war, conflict and aggression, this project encourages people to imagine peace through color, creativity, hope and love.
The umbrella is a powerful symbol because it offers shelter and protection. It welcomes everyone beneath it — regardless of race, age, gender or nationality. The canopy becomes a space for hopes, dreams, prayers and aspirations, making each umbrella both a personal expression and a shared call for peace.
More than 900,000 people in 25 countries have taken part in Lamb Umbrellas for Peace projects, creating a worldwide collection of vibrant, one-of-a-kind works of art dedicated to peace.
Umbrellas will be available beginning the weekend of August 22–23. Children, families and adults are all invited to take one home, reflect on what peace means to them and decorate it in their own unique way. The result will be a fun, meaningful and colorful expression of peace that we can share as a community. More information will be available in the coming weeks.
