What is Pastoral Care?
Historically, pastoral care was viewed as the care of the Pastor for the congregation. The word “pastoral” is from the Latin word for shepherd. A pastor is like a shepherd who cares for the needs of the flock. Similar to Jesus stating that “I am the good shepherd…” (John 10:14). Since a pastor can’t be everywhere, the pastoral care division of a Church takes on the role of caring for the whole parish community. In the early church, members also cared for one another, sharing food, resources, time and compassion. Here at St. Thomas, those involved with pastoral care hope to offer programs and services to care for our community. We have expanded to include a Wellness program, Spiritual Direction, Partners in Prayer, and coming in December, The Hope Café which will provide a new opportunity to accompany those who are grieving.
